REACTION FROM YESTERDAY'S VICTORY

The Reds won 1-0 against the previously unbeaten South Shields

29 January 2024

After a terrific win on Sunday afternoon here at Oakwell, we spoke with head coach, Jess Horsley and star performer, Georgina Wilson-Roberts!

In a closely-contested affair with South Shields on the AstroTurf at Oakwell on Sunday, a late Victoria Chincharo header helped the Reds to what could be a massive three points as the race for promotion continues.

Our visitors were unbeaten in the league this season before yesterday, and whilst Barnsley weren't perhaps at their free-flowing best at times, they dug in to secure a priceless victory.

Player of the Match on the day, Georgina Wilson-Roberts told us: "The game probably didn’t start how we would have liked and for the first half an hour I think we struggled to settle into it and couldn’t really get hold of the ball.

"South Shields put a bit of pressure on and were probably on top. But towards the end of the first half we started playing our football and grew into the game and were unlucky to have a goal ruled out for offside.

"We had a good chat at half time and talked about how to deal with their style of play and came out and played a lot better. We defended well in the second half and created a lot more chances and finally got our goal with a few minutes left. We weren’t at our best but we dug deep for the three points and I think that’s shows where we’re at as a team."

Head Coach, Jess Horsley reflected on three points that ensured her side remain top of the North East Regional Women's Premier Division for at least another seven days, telling us: "It was a massive three points against a team that haven’t lost a game yet in the league.

"South Shields had a game plan that stopped us playing at stages. The girls dug deep and kept going until the end and got the result they deserved.

"The fans were brilliant and it’s great to see people getting down and supporting the girls. The reaction when the goal went in from players and fans was fantastic."

The Women are back in action next Sunday (February 4) away from home when travelling to face Spennymoor in a 2pm kick off.
