MARTIN DEVANEY ON PLAY-OFF TIE DEFEAT

8 May 2024

Martin Devaney spoke to iFollow Barnsley after the Reds marginally lost out on aggregate to Bolton Wanderers.

The Reds' 23/24 campaign came to a close on Tuesday evening in the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs semi-final second leg, despite winning 3-2 on the night at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Devaney's side knew that a two-goal victory would take the tie to extra-time following a 3-1 first leg defeat at Oakwell four days prior.

Sam Cosgrove was the only change to the starting XI for the Reds after the first encounter and posed a threat to the Whites' defence all evening, scoring a brace with his head, along with Adam Phillips' low finish, to set up a grandstand finish in Greater Manchester.

However it was the hosts that hung on for a narrow 5-4 victory on aggregate and Interim Head Coach Martin Devaney spoke to iFollow Barnsley after the full-time whistle.

"It's really disappointing, we wanted to get to Wembley ultimately," he began. "But in terms of the first leg, we gave ourselves a lot to do. Coming here with two goals to try and catch up is really difficult.

"We started off really well. I thought in the first-half we were comfortable. We get the goal, maybe it could have been a penalty before with Sam (Cosgrove) and then we concede two poor goals in five minutes - which is disappointing.

"At half-time, I spoke about character. I spoke about resilience. Spoke about playing for the shirt. It's got to mean a lot, and we've got to stick together and they showed that - in abundance. To get the goals and come back 3-2 and make a real game of it, I'm really proud."

The remainder of the interview with Martin Devaney is available to watch on iFollow Barnsley.
