U23s | REPORT: Barnsley 2-4 Nottingham Forest

21 April 2017

Reds battle strongly but suffer defeat in the final game of the season.

Barnsley Under 23s ended their Professional Development League season with defeat after slipping to a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Jacob Brown went close to an opener on his return, volleying wide from the edge of the area but it was Kayden Jackson who opened the scoring from the spot just before the break.

Forest were level five minutes into the second half when Fred Nielsen put through his own net and Arvin Appiah put the visitors ahead just before the hour from close range.

Ben Williams had a header saved at point blank range by Jordan Wright and then hit the post, but it was Matty Wolfe who levelled after firing home 11 minutes from time.

The visitors bagged two goals in the final four minutes as Gomis fired home from close range and then tucked in a stoppage time penalty to secure the visitors all three points.

Barnsley began the game the stronger of the two sides with Jacob Brown's header bringing the first save out of Wright before the Reds forward fired Kayden Jackson's knock down wide.

Jack Walton made a flying save to keep Virgil Gomis at bay as he took aim but the Reds responded immediately as Louis Wardle burst clear and slipped in Jackson, who lashed wide.

It was on the stroke of half time when the Reds took the lead as Jackson was upended in the area. He dusted himself down and rolled home the spot kick to put the Reds ahead.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Nottingham Forest.

Within five minutes of the second half getting underway, Forest were level as Arvin Appiah's low cross was turned into his own net by Fred Nielsen.

Appiah put the visitors ahead just before the hour as he turned smartly and fired into the roof of the net but the Reds grew back into the game, fashioning three good chances in a matter of moments.

Jared Bird's cross-come-shot almost flew into the top corner with Wright rooted to the spot, but the stopper made a great save to keep out Ben Williams' close range header, before the winger hit the post with a close range glancing header.

Paul Harsley's side drew level 11 minutes from time as Romal Palmer's effort ricocheted into the path of Matty Wolfe, who slammed home beyond Wright from the centre of the box.

It was not to be for the Reds as two goals for Virgil Gomis in the final moments helped Forest to victory.

After Adam Lund had brilliantly cleared off the line following Luke McCormick's low ball in, Gomis stabbed in from close range to give the visitors the advantage.

And in stoppage time, McCormick was upended by the onrushing Jack Walton and Gomis sent the striker the wrong way from 12 yards to seal victory for Forest.
