The young Scottish starlet has agreed terms at Oakwell.
We are delighted to confirm an agreement is in place for the signing of Stevie Mallan from Scottish Championship side, St Mirren FC.
The 21-year-old midfielder will join the Club on a three-year deal after the Reds moved quickly to secure the signature of one of Scottish football’s hottest properties.
Scoring 12 goals this season for the Saints, Mallan has been the standout player and his exuberant performances helped keep his side in the league as well as inspiring them to reach the Scottish Challenge Cup final in March.
Having made his first team debut for St Mirren in 2014, the midfield maestro has over 100 appearances under his belt, scoring an impressive 29 goals in the process in both league and cup.
The tricky, skilful midfielder has scored plenty of spectacular goals in his short career thus far as well as being a set-piece specialist. His stunning goals can be seen on the YouTube video below, including a magnificent solo effort which won him the 2015 PFA Scotland ‘Goal of the Season’ award.
His great form has been recognised internationally, with a call-up to the Scotland U21 set-up in March. The midfielder’s reputation within the game is growing from strength-to-strength which prompted Paul Heckingbottom to bring him to Oakwell.
Speaking to barnsleyfc.co.uk, Heckingbottom was pleased to secure a quick deal and add to his squad ahead of next season’s Sky Bet Championship campaign.
Heckingbottom said, “I am really pleased that Stevie can see his future at Oakwell. He has had some real admirers looking at him which we have managed to fight off and bring him here. He’s a young, stylish midfielder who loves to pop up and get a goal so I think the fans will be excited to watch him.
“He has really bought into what we want to do here and has seen the rise that the Club has been on recently, so as soon as the opportunity came, he has jumped at it.
“I said from the start that we wanted to get our business done early, so I am really pleased that the Club has moved quickly and made this deal happen. We’ve just finished a strong season back in the Championship and we are looking to build on this now, which I think helped Stevie in his decision to join us.”
Upon signing for the Reds, Mallan spoke exclusively to Barnsley Player HD about the move and is looking forward to getting going at Oakwell.
Mallan said, “I am very excited to take the next step in my career. Something I always wanted to do was come down to England to try and make myself better. I definitely feel like Barnsley was the right choice to make so I am excited to get working with all the other boys. I have seen Barnsley come up from League One and finish 14th, which is an amazing achievement, so I am looking forward to getting started and hopefully adding to the squad.
“I am very impressed with the set-up here as well. Compared to the stadia I have played at in Scotland, this is massive. I’ve had a good look around Barnsley as well, it seems a great town and I am now excited to come down and work here.”
